Today we Skyped the with Grade 1a class from the Tokyo International School. They are currently investigating the senses and found out that we had completed a unit of inquiry about the senses at the beginning of the year. Two weeks ago they sent us some some questions on Twitter: We are always looking for opportunities to reflect on our learning and make revisions to our understandings, so we jumped at this opportunity. We discussed their questions and brainstormed a few answers. We loved our Skype chat and the kids at TIS said we did a good job of answering their questions. They taught us some new things about the senses too! We hope to see and speak to our new friends again soon!
Some reflections we had on Skype:
On Wednesday, January 16, Grade 1 visited Acres, an animal concerns organization here in Singapore. We learned lots about what animals need to live, be healthy, and stay safe. Before leaving for the trip, we read I Was Walking Down the Road by Sarah E. Barchas. The story is about a little girl who collects animals as she finds them and puts them in cages. At the end of the story she decides to let them all go free. We discussed the issue of putting wild animals in cages:
After the trip we discussed what we had learned about animal protection in relation to one of our lines of inquiry: "The things that can affect life cycles". Through the sharing of personal stories and experiences, we decided on a few key points:
Welcome back to school! I hope you all had a fun and restful holiday. We have been very busy this week with literacy and maths work, as well as a new unit of inquiry. We've also been making new friends! This week we welcomed 3 new students to our class: Bailey, Miri & Sofia. Everyone is very happy to have them as part of our class community. Meet & Greet To share experiences from our holidays and get to know each other a little better, we played a game of "Meet & Greet". Students wandered around the room introducing themselves to people and sharing facts about themselves or experiences from their holidays. Every few minutes they wrote down some key words from their conversations with a "Run & Write" activity. These key words became the collection of ideas that helped them complete some letter writing about the holiday. Writing Letters to Our New Classmates Every returning student in our class wrote letters to welcome each of our new friends. We introduced ourselves and shared a little bit about what it like to be a student at ISS and in 1AC. We hope you enjoyed reading the letters Bailey, Miri and Sofia! Please remember to check our class blog regularly for updates and information about homework, Showtime, and other learning events! Here's to another great semester in Grade 1AC! I'm glad to have you all back!! :) After weeks of rehearsal it was time for the big show! On Wednesday, December 12 the Elementary School invited families to view our H20-themed December Concert. Grade 1 did an EXCEPTIONAL job of performing their Dragon/H20 song. What a great success! On Wednesday, November 28 Grade 1 visited Oh' Farms on Bah Soon Pah Road. We learned all about hydroponics and the growth of edible plants. The visit supported our inquiry into what processes foods go through before reaching grocery stores. We were also lucky enough to visit the Oh' Farms Butterfly Lodge. Some of the things we learned:
Last Wednesday, we visited the Hay's Dairies Goat Farm. The day before the field trip we made predictions about how the farm may be connected to our unit. Once at the farm we saw the goats being milked and heard an informative talk about the processes milk goes through on the farm. We were also given time to ask lots of questions. When we returned to school we reflected on what we had learned and expressed any questions that we still had: KNOWLEDGE GAINED:
QUESTIONS:
In the days following our visit, we continued to reflect on what we had learned at the farm as well as the processing and distribution of milk. Over the course of 3 days (before and after our visit), we completed a four corners activity answering four main questions:
Happy early birthday to Filippa who is turning 7 on Friday! Filippa is leaving for a family holiday tomorrow and won't be in Singapore to celebrate her birthday with our class, so we celebrated early. Thanks to Filippa's mum for bringing us some yummy banana cupcakes with icing and sprinkles. Enjoy your birthday Filippa! We'll miss you while you're away! Happy birthday to Aran who turns 7 today! Aran treated us to some delicious cupcakes baked by his mum (who many of the students now think is "the best baker ever!"). Thank you Aran for sharing your birthday celebrations with us. We hope you enjoy celebrating with your family this weekend!
